Türkiye İş Bankası İstanbul Half Marathon Training Plan

19 April 2026

The Istanbul Half runs flat along the water's edge of the historic peninsula - Marmara on one side, eight thousand years of city on the other. It is simultaneously a sightseeing route and one of the fastest half marathons anywhere.

What the course is actually like

The course follows the coastal roads around the historic peninsula in an out-and-back layout, essentially at sea level and essentially flat - past Kumkapi and Cankurtaran, around Sarayburnu where the Marmara meets the Bosphorus, to Eminonu and the Golden Horn with the Galata Bridge in view. Elite fields have produced world-class times here, which tells you what the profile is.

For an ordinary runner the same features mean an honest PB course with a view: wide roads, gentle curves, no climb worth planning around. The water is beside you for most of the distance, and the skyline of mosques and towers does the entertainment a flat course otherwise lacks.

How to train for it

Train it like the fast half it is: threshold work and goal-pace blocks matter more than hills, and this site's free pace calculator turns a recent 10K into a realistic target. The half distance forgives less vagueness than the marathon - most runners can genuinely race it, which makes an honest goal pace the whole strategy.

The flat, curving coastal road rewards even effort and punishes surges. If the field is dense in the early kilometres, let it be dense: a crowded first 3 km costs seconds, while weaving to escape it costs the same seconds plus energy you will want at 18 km.

Weather and what to expect on the day

April in Istanbul is spring at its most cooperative: usually mild and cool enough for fast running, warm enough that the start-line wait is civilised. It can rain, and the coastal road is exposed if wind comes off the water - but by big-race standards the conditions lottery here is friendly.

The race is large and the city treats it as an occasion. Sea-level air, cool temperatures and a flat road are the combination distance runners hunt for - if you have a half-marathon PB in you this spring, this is the kind of course it happens on.
