Media Maratón de Bogotá Training Plan

26 July 2026

The Bogota Half is one of Latin America's great mass races - tens of thousands of runners at 2,640 metres above sea level. The distance is half; the altitude makes sure it does not feel that way.

What the altitude actually does

Bogota sits higher than Mexico City - around 2,640 metres - and at that height the air simply carries less oxygen. For a sea-level runner the effect on a half marathon is measured in minutes: paces that feel controlled at home become unsustainable, and the deficit shows up early, not late. Even the elite fields run notably slower here than at sea level.

The course itself moves through the city's avenues with rises that would be minor at sea level; at altitude, each one costs more than it should. Treat the profile as rolling even where the map says flat - thin air converts gentle grades into real ones.

How to train for it

The half distance changes the altitude arithmetic in your favour: it is shorter, so the strategies are simpler. If you can arrive one to two weeks early, acclimatisation helps meaningfully; if not, arriving close to race day and racing before the body fully registers the altitude is the established alternative. The poor plan is the middle - four or five days of disturbed sleep and no adaptation.

Recalibrate the goal regardless. Pace by breathing and effort, not by your sea-level watch targets, and start conservatively enough that the first climb does not set your ceiling for the day. Locals will stream past you early; many of them live at this altitude. Run your own race.

Weather and what to expect on the day

Bogota's altitude keeps it spring-cool all year: late-July race mornings are typically crisp, warming only mildly, with the tropical sun far stronger than the temperature suggests. Sun protection matters more than heat management.

The event is enormous - one of the continent's biggest road races - and the city treats it as a festival. Expect dense fields, loud support, and a first kilometre that moves at the crowd's pace rather than yours. At this altitude, that enforced patience is a favour.
