Midnight Sun Marathon Training Plan
20 June 2026
Tromso sits far above the Arctic Circle, and in June the sun simply does not set. The Midnight Sun Marathon starts in the evening and finishes in broad daylight around midnight - a race your body clock has no template for.
What the course is actually like
The course is an out-and-back layout from the city centre, crossing the Tromso Bridge twice - the route's main climbs - with spurs along the island's shoreline and into Tromsdalen on the mainland. Between the bridge crossings the terrain rolls gently; total elevation is modest, but the course never stays perfectly flat for long.
What makes it singular is the light. The race starts in the evening and finishes around midnight under full Arctic daylight, with snow still on the peaks across the water. There is no dusk, no headlamps, no visual cue that the day is ending - a strangeness that runners consistently rank above the scenery itself.
How to train for it
The course asks for standard rolling-terrain preparation - comfortable climbing in the middle kilometres of a long run, and twice over a bridge that is honest but not cruel. The unusual preparation is circadian: this race happens when your body expects to be winding down.
In the final weeks, move a few key runs to the evening, and on race week, protect your sleep schedule deliberately - a nap on race afternoon is a legitimate part of the plan. Eat your pre-race meal at a time that matches an evening start rather than defaulting to marathon-morning habits. The runners who struggle here usually mistimed their day, not their training.
Weather and what to expect on the day
Arctic summer is cool and changeable: evening temperatures typically sit in single digits to low teens, and wind or light rain off the sea can arrive regardless of forecast. The persistent daylight makes it feel warmer than it is - dress for the thermometer, not the light, with a layer you can shed.
If the sky cooperates, the reward is the midnight sun hanging over the water to the north as you run - the sight the race is named for. Even under cloud, finishing a marathon at midnight in full daylight is a memory that outlasts any split.
