Generali Genève Marathon Training Plan

9 May 2026

Geneva runs from the villages east of the city down to a finish on the lakeside by the Jet d'Eau, passing vineyards and the shore of Lake Geneva with the Alps behind. A net-downhill profile and wide roads make it a quietly strong PB course.

What the course is actually like

The route starts in the villages on the eastern side - Chene-Bourg, near Cologny - and flows westward toward central Geneva, through rural communities, fields and vineyards, with Lake Geneva and the Alps in view on clear days. The early kilometres roll gently but lose more height than they gain; the second half flattens through the city and finishes on the Mont-Blanc quay by the lake, beside the Jet d'Eau fountain.\n\nThat net-downhill shape, on wide runnable roads, is what makes Geneva fast. The catch is the same as any downhill course: the early descent tempts fresh legs into banking time the quads will later resent. The scenery is a genuine distraction - a good problem, but a pacing hazard.

How to train for it

Include downhill running in the plan. Long runs that finish on gentle descents teach your quads to absorb the early kilometres here without paying for it at 35k - the specific preparation a net-downhill course rewards and a purely flat build neglects.\n\nOtherwise it is standard spring-marathon work: the May date puts the build through winter, and goal-pace discipline matters more than climbing strength. Rehearse a restrained opening; the descent and the lake views both push you to start faster than the finish will forgive.

Weather and what to expect on the day

Early-to-mid May by Lake Geneva is usually mild and pleasant - moderate temperatures well suited to marathon running, with a chance of spring rain but generally comfortable conditions. Swiss organisation is precise and the logistics calm.\n\nThe finish is the reward: back into the heart of Geneva, along the lakeside quay with the Jet d'Eau throwing spray beside the line. It is a course that gives you countryside, vineyards, lake and city in one loop, and a fast time if you respect the early downhill.
