Kigali International Peace Marathon Training Plan
14 June 2026
Kigali runs through the "land of a thousand hills" at around 1,500 metres of altitude - hilly and thin-aired at once. Launched in 2005, the Peace Marathon is also a civic symbol of Rwanda's recovery, and the course makes sure you earn the medal.
What the course is actually like
The marathon is two loops of a half-marathon circuit through Kigali, starting and finishing at BK Arena on paved city roads. The defining feature is the terrain: Rwanda is called the land of a thousand hills for a reason, and the course is genuinely undulating - sustained climbs and descents rather than flat city running, and you meet each one twice.\n\nAltitude compounds it. At roughly 1,500 metres the air is thinner than sea level, so the hills cost more than their gradient suggests and the elite times run well off flat-course pace. Between the loops and the hills, this is a race to respect, not to chase a PB on.
How to train for it
Train the hills specifically - long runs over continuously rolling terrain where you practise climbing steady and recovering on the descents, because the course never gives you a flat stretch to hide in. Flat-course training leaves you unprepared for a route that is essentially all gradient.\n\nFor the altitude, the half-marathon-loop structure and moderate 1,500m height make it more forgiving than Bogota or Mexico City, but sea-level runners should still recalibrate: pace by effort and breathing, start the first loop conservatively, and accept that the second loop's hills will feel harder than the first's. Arriving a few days early to adjust helps if the schedule allows.
Weather and what to expect on the day
Mid-June sits in Rwanda's long dry season: comfortable temperatures from the high teens warming into the mid-twenties, moderate humidity, and low rain odds though a shower is always possible. The altitude keeps mornings pleasant; the sun near the equator is stronger than the temperature implies, so protection matters.\n\nThe race carries meaning beyond sport - it began as a symbol of the country's recovery after the 1994 genocide, and the day is treated as a civic occasion. Expect strong local support, well-organised aid, and a finish at BK Arena earned across two honest, hilly laps.
