Victoria Falls Marathon Training Plan
5 July 2026
The Victoria Falls Marathon crosses the bridge over the Zambezi gorge with the falls in full view, then loops into a national park where you might share the road with elephants. Run in the cool dry season, it is one of the great scenic marathons - and the wildlife is not a metaphor.
What the course is actually like
The route starts near the falls, crosses the Victoria Falls Bridge - briefly into Zambia and back, with the full spray and the gorge below - then runs along Zambezi Drive parallel to the river before looping into Zambezi National Park. Inside the park you run a shaded loop where game rangers are posted and elephants, antelope and other wildlife are a real possibility, not a brochure promise.\n\nThe profile is gently rolling rather than flat or brutal; the surface is road throughout. Nobody comes here for a fast time. The bridge, the falls and the chance of an elephant on the course are the reasons, and they are enough.
How to train for it
Standard road-marathon preparation covers the distance and the gentle rolls - no special terrain to rehearse. The July date, for northern-hemisphere runners, means a marathon in the middle of your summer, so some heat-adapted training helps even though race morning itself is cool.\n\nThe more useful preparation is logistical and mental. This is a destination race in a remote place; the days around it are as much of the trip as the run. Go for the experience, pace it conservatively, and leave enough in your legs to actually look up at the falls and the wildlife rather than grinding for a split.
Weather and what to expect on the day
Early July is Zimbabwe's cool dry season: mornings around 10 degrees, warming toward the low-to-mid twenties by afternoon, with minimal humidity and effectively no rain. It is close to ideal running weather, and the reason the race sits where it does on the calendar.\n\nExpect an early start, chilly spray off the falls on the bridge, and a day built around wildlife safety - rangers on the park loop, and the small but genuine chance of stopping for an elephant. It is the rare marathon where "watch out for game" is a real instruction.
