The Great Wall Marathon Training Plan

16 May 2026

The Great Wall Marathon at Huangyaguan includes 5,164 stone steps on the Wall itself. Nobody runs this course for a time - it is a completion event, and it wants a different body than a road marathon does.

What the course is actually like

The route combines sections on the Huangyaguan stretch of the Wall with roads and paths through the villages and valley below - and the Wall sections are the event: thousands of stone steps, irregular in height and depth, some steep enough to want hands, climbed and descended on legs that also have a marathon to run.

Forget everything a road profile chart tells you. Steps break stride entirely - there is no rhythm to settle into, and the descents punish quads harder than the climbs punish lungs. Finish times here run hours beyond road-marathon times for the same runners, by design. The clock is a formality; the Wall is the distance.

How to train for it

Train stairs, specifically and repeatedly - stadium steps, high-rise stairwells, steep trail staircases - both up and down, because the descents are where untrained legs fail. Strength work stops being injury insurance here and becomes the sport itself: step-ups, lunges, single-leg work, at volumes a road plan would consider excessive.

Run your long runs on whatever broken, hilly terrain you can find, and practise hiking with purpose - almost everyone walks the steepest Wall sections, and efficient purposeful walking is a trainable skill road runners never develop. Aid and time expectations differ from city races; read the organiser's materials closely rather than assuming big-city logistics.

Weather and what to expect on the day

The third Saturday of May in this part of northern China is a lottery that skews warm: editions have ranged from pleasantly mild to genuinely hot, and much of the course is exposed, on stone, with little shade. Heat preparation - training in the warm part of your day, practising drinking to schedule - deserves a place in the plan.

Expect the day to be long. Between the steps, the heat and the field bottlenecking on narrow Wall sections, patience is part of the kit. This is the race on this site where the photograph at the finish, not the number beside it, is the point.
