Prague International Marathon Training Plan
3 May 2026
Prague starts and finishes on the Old Town Square and crosses the Charles Bridge in the opening kilometres. It is nearly flat on paper - and then the cobblestones, bridges and river turns start charging rent on your rhythm.
What the course is actually like
The profile is gentle - Prague is a mostly flat course by any honest measure - but flat is not the same as simple. The route includes stretches of cobblestone through the medieval centre, a Charles Bridge crossing while the field is still dense, repeated bridge hops over the Vltava, and out-and-back sections along the river where the kilometres accumulate quietly.
The cost is rhythm rather than climbing. Cobbles change your footstrike, corners in the old town interrupt your stride, and the river sections trade the crowds of the centre for exposure and repetition. Runners who treat Prague as a pure PB course tend to lose their splits in the texture; runners who expect a rhythm-management race usually find it fast anyway.
How to train for it
Train as for any flat spring marathon - the winter build, the goal-pace blocks - but add some honest variety of surface. A weekly run that includes broken pavement, cobbles or uneven towpath teaches your ankles and calves what the old town will ask of them; the muscles that stabilise on rough ground are trainable and mostly untrained in road runners.
Practise re-finding pace after interruptions. Surging back to goal pace after every corner burns matches; easing back over thirty seconds does not. Prague rewards runners who treat pace as an average to return to rather than a line to defend.
Weather and what to expect on the day
Early May in central Europe is changeable: usually cool and excellent for running, but editions have seen everything from single-digit rain to genuinely warm afternoons. The morning start keeps the odds friendly; a discardable layer covers the rest.
Expect the opening kilometres to be slow regardless of your plan - the old town start funnels a big field through streets that were designed for the fourteenth century. Let it happen. The time you concede in the first two kilometres is recoverable; the energy spent weaving through a medieval city is not.
