Ochsner Sport Zürich Marathon Training Plan

12 April 2026

Zurich runs out along its lake and back, from the Quaibruecke to a finish at Sechselaeutenplatz - flat, scenic, and quietly one of the friendlier PB courses in the Alps' shadow.

What the course is actually like

The defining feature is the long lakeside stretch: from the city, the route follows the shore of Lake Zurich through residential districts and past boathouses, with the water on one side and, on clear days, the Alps standing behind it. The profile is flat throughout - this is a course where the scenery is dramatic and the elevation chart is not.

The lakeside out-and-back structure means long, steady, uninterrupted running - few corners, few surges, ideal for locking into a rhythm. It also means the return leg covers ground you have already seen, with whatever wind you enjoyed outbound now in your face or gone entirely.

How to train for it

Train it as the rhythm course it is: extended goal-pace blocks inside long runs, even-effort discipline, and the strength work that flat courses quietly require. The April date puts the build through the winter - the same bargain as Rotterdam and Hamburg, with the same reward of a cool race day.

The long lakeside kilometres deserve a mental plan of their own. Steady scenery and no course events for kilometres at a time suits runners who like disappearing into a rhythm and starves runners who feed on variety - know which you are, and if it is the latter, plan your fuelling and check-in points as deliberate structure.

Weather and what to expect on the day

Mid-April beside the lake is usually cool and comfortable - reliable spring-marathon weather by Alpine standards, with rain more likely than heat. Wind off the lake is the variable on the exposed shore sections, though rarely at the strength the coastal flat races contend with.

Swiss organisation is as advertised: precise logistics, accurate course, calm start. The finish at Sechselaeutenplatz brings you back into the city for the final stretch - flat to the line, with nothing between you and your time except the pacing decisions you made two hours earlier.
