NLB Ljubljana Marathon Training Plan

17 October 2026

Ljubljana is a flat, fast single loop through one of Europe's prettiest small capitals - past the castle hill, over Plecnik's Triple Bridge, along the river - run in cool October. Slovenia's biggest race, and a genuine PB course wearing a postcard.

What the course is actually like

A single flat loop through central Ljubljana with only around 160 metres of total ascent - effectively flat - starting on Slovenska Cesta and finishing at Kongresni trg. The route threads the historic core: beneath the hilltop castle, over the Triple Bridge designed by Joze Plecnik, along the Ljubljanica river, past the copper dragons of the Dragon Bridge, and through the green expanse of Tivoli Park.\n\nThe combination - flat, certified, scenic, well-organised - is exactly why runners come here chasing qualifying times. There are no tactical demands in the profile; the course gives you a fast surface and a beautiful backdrop and asks only that you pace it honestly.

How to train for it

Prepare as for any fast flat marathon: sustained goal-pace volume, even-effort discipline, and strength work for the uninterrupted load. Ljubljana adds no terrain to rehearse.\n\nThe October date makes it an autumn goal - a full summer of training behind you, meeting cool race-day weather. That timing is a gift for runners who build through the warm months; arrive with the summer's volume intact and the flat course does the rest.

Weather and what to expect on the day

Mid-October in Ljubljana typically brings 6-15 degree temperatures - close to ideal for fast running - with autumn's variability meaning a cool, possibly damp morning more often than a warm one. Good PB weather by any standard.\n\nThe city turns out for its biggest race of the year, and the compact old-town loop keeps the crowds close for much of the route. Run it like the fast course it is: the scenery is the reward, the flatness is the opportunity, and the only real risk is letting the pretty first few kilometres pull you out too hard.
