Milano Marathon Training Plan

12 April 2026

Milan is Italy's fastest marathon: a flat, certified city loop that starts and finishes at the Piazza del Duomo, past the Castello Sforzesco and the San Siro stadium. A big-race atmosphere on a course built for personal bests.

What the course is actually like

A single loop through central Milan, flat and IAAF-certified, beginning and ending in the Piazza del Duomo in front of the cathedral. Along the way the route passes the Arco della Pace, the Castello Sforzesco, and - around the 20 km mark - the San Siro racecourse and the Meazza football stadium, before returning to the Duomo for the finish.\n\nIt is promoted as Italy's fastest course, and the reputation is earned: flat, wide, well-organised, and a recognised Boston qualifier. As with every fast city loop, the course adds no complications of its own - the only obstacle to an even race is starting too quickly in the excitement of a 40,000-strong field.

How to train for it

Flat-course fundamentals: long goal-pace blocks, even-split discipline, and strength work for the repetitive load a course with no hills concentrates on the same muscles for two-plus hours. Milan asks no tactical questions.\n\nThe April date means a winter build - the northern-hemisphere bargain of dark-month consistency for a cool race day. Practise fuelling at pace so the aid stations don't cost you the seconds the flat course is handing you, and rehearse a deliberately calm first 10 km through the crowded centre.

Weather and what to expect on the day

Mid-April in Milan is typically mild spring weather - usually cool enough for fast running, though warm editions happen and the Lombardy plain can be humid. The morning start helps; conditions rarely decide this race the way they can on exposed coastal courses.\n\nThe atmosphere is the draw alongside the speed: a huge field, an iconic start and finish at the Duomo, and a lap that ties the cathedral, the castle and the San Siro together. Run it like the fast course it is - trust the flatness, hold the plan, and save something for the return to the Duomo.
