Hokkaido Marathon Training Plan

30 August 2026

The Hokkaido Marathon is the only full marathon run in a Japanese summer - possible because Sapporo is the cool corner of the country. Japanese elites use it to rehearse championship heat; everyone else gets a big-city race from Odori Park.

What the course is actually like

The race starts and finishes at Odori Park in central Sapporo and tours the city - through the Susukino entertainment district and across the green campus of Hokkaido University - on a course that shares ground with the route used for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic marathon, which was moved to Sapporo precisely for the cooler weather. The profile is urban-gentle: nothing that shapes a race plan.

What shapes the plan is the date. Late August in Sapporo is mild by Japanese standards - that is the event's whole premise - but it is still summer, and editions range from genuinely cool to warm enough that the second half becomes about management rather than pace.

How to train for it

This is the rare race where heat preparation is the specific work even though the venue is chosen for coolness. Train through your summer with some quality sessions in the warm part of the day, practise drinking to schedule rather than thirst, and settle your race-day kit on hot long runs rather than race morning.

The field is a feature: Japan's marathon culture runs deep, and the race draws serious club runners in numbers, with Japanese elites using it as championship preparation. Pacing around you will be disciplined - joining a group at your goal pace is easy, and worth planning for.

Weather and what to expect on the day

Expect anything from ideal mid-teens to a warm, sunny mid-twenties day, often with low humidity by Japanese summer standards - the reason this race can exist at all. The morning start takes the edge off; the sun, if it is out, arrives for your closing kilometres.

Go out at a pace the warm scenario survives, not the cool one. If the day turns out cool, the negative split is free; if it turns out warm, you are the runner still passing people through Susukino while the optimists walk. In summer racing, the conservative start is not caution - it is strategy.
