Haspa Marathon Hamburg Training Plan
26 April 2026
Hamburg is Germany's biggest spring marathon: a flat, fast loop past the harbour, the Reeperbahn and the Alster lakes, with crowd support that flattens the few ramps the course has.
What the course is actually like
A single loop through Hamburg's districts - HafenCity and the Elbe waterfront, the St. Pauli and Reeperbahn stretch, the Alster lakes - on wide streets with long straight sections and a profile that is almost entirely flat. What small rises exist are short and come with dense crowds attached.
The race carries a World Athletics Gold Label and draws deep, fast fields, which matters practically: at almost any goal pace you will have company the whole way. Combined with the width of the roads, Hamburg is one of the easier majors-adjacent races to run evenly without thinking about traffic.
How to train for it
The course asks for the standard flat-race preparation - winter base, spring goal-pace blocks, strength work for the unvaried load. Its late-April date makes it the natural target for a northern-hemisphere winter build, a few weeks after the Rotterdam and Zurich window.
Rehearse your fuelling on long runs with the same seriousness as your pacing. A flat, fast course with pace groups means fewer excuses to slow at aid stations, and the runners who practise drinking at pace bank real time over those who stop and restart eight times.
Weather and what to expect on the day
Late April in Hamburg is typically cool and fair - classic spring marathon weather - with the north-German caveat of possible wind and drizzle. The urban route offers more shelter than the coastal flat courses; conditions rarely decide this race.
What defines the day instead is noise: Hamburg's support is famously loud and continuous for a race of this profile, the Reeperbahn especially. It makes the middle kilometres feel easier than they are - pleasant, and worth guarding against with a deliberately boring first 10K.
